Steam fixes

Unread post by DutchNeo » March 1st, 2013, 3:42 pm

Hi All,

Oke, because of the last big steam update (110mb) some things are messed up.
They have changed the locations of files and folders.
This change and a different steam engine will improve the performance and more.
I will try to explain some problems and also i explain some things that are improved.

During the rewrite of steam, your old things (maps, models, sprites, sounds, gfx/env, settings, your spraypaint (tempdecal), etc) are placed in:
.../common/halflife/valve_yourname (this folder is just for your old files, steam and halflife doesnt use any thing from here, therfor you need to copy things, ill explain below here)

With the new Steam update, steam is now prepared for HD (high densenty, better quality and performance).
So some things are depending on what your screen resolution is what you want to use at the game.
You can choose when you open halflife options menu, go to video.
In the middle you can choose your screensize.
* normal or widescreen
For the moment i recommand to use a normal resolution, because at widescreen there are still some issues and errors.
This setting will be remembered in the settings file.
Below this video options you can also choose OPENGL. This is the best way. Only with old slow grafic cards choose other option then OPENGL.

Oke, now:
In the common/halflife folder you will have the following:
* common/halflife/valve
In this folder are all standard halflife stuff. Standard sounds, models, maps, sprites, gfx/env.
In here is also your settings files.
config.cfg (standard config settings HL uses)
userconfig.cfg ( user config settings that overwrites the standard config)
tempdecal.wad (spraypaint)

* common/halflife/valve_yourname
In this folder is all your old files and stuff
* common/halflife/valve_download
This folder is used on the moment you go on a server and download the stuff for that map to play, it will be put in here
* common/halflife/valve_hd
Only when you have put your screen resolution on widescreen (hd) then all downloaded files goes in here

Oke now simple thing to do:
Go to your common/halflife/valve_yourname folder and copy all things in here to
* common/halflife/valve
* common/halflife/valve_download

Now the following things are fixed:
- Maps, models, sprites, sounds, etc you already had you dont have to download again, there are back for good use.
- Your spraypaint is back (please make sure that the tempdecal.wad file is read-only marked (open the settings of that file and mark it))
- Your player model is back, also models of other players are back and visable.
- If you like to type during game in the screen most players use "y" to open chat. Before some keys were messed up and keys were on other places. They fixed all kinds of keyboard setting. Now it uses your computer keyboard settings and works perfect.
- Also many things in the community are made better and much more links. Using "shift-tab" to open the community. Its also made easier to make players your friend.
- Steam and half life starts faster then before, it load the game stuff it need much faster. Your faster in game. Also going to a next map goes much faster.

Things that are not fixed yet are:
* Halflife menu options, some things you can change and it remembers it in userconfig. But some things you cant change in this menu, like the mouse sensetivity.
* AMX menus are messed up, some page and layout codes are not correct working.
* By opening a map on the server to play, the first picture you see was normally taken from the start_player view, now it takes the view from the center of the map.
* Playing still gives some stotter (small lag), this has something to do with the HL new engine.

For the fixes we need to wait for a another steam update. Except the mouse sensitivity, ill explain how to fix that below here.

Oke next thing: FPS (frames per second).
Most people already have seen that the max that thay can get is 60 fps. Well this is the max that HL gives.
I have found a way to make it higher. It is possible that this solution can not be done by everybody, it depends on sort computer and grafics card that you are using.
Oke, in the same periode of the big steam update, i also got a big update for flash (adobe or else). Also a big update for my grafics drivers (ATI control center).
Because of better software of programmes it is nesseasary for me to look at the settings on my ATI card through ATI control center.
I improved it by setting it to high performance.
What did it fix: My fps is now between 90 and 100 fps. My grafics in game are so much better and sharper view.

Oke, now steam cloud:
If you have copied all your files to the right folders, its possible that steam-cloud comes with a question to syncrome all, say yes.
This will fix any broken links with config files or gamestuff.

Oke, now mouse sensitivity:
Go to common/halflife/valve and open the userconfig.cfg
search for the line:
* sensitivity "5.970000" (the numbers can be different for each player)
In my halflife options menu i had the setting at 6. Because something has changed the behavior of the mouse in the game, most people want to make the mouse react faster. So the sensitivity needs to be higher. I have double it from before from 6 to 12. So: sensitivity "11.970000"
Now i have the same mouse speed as it used to be.

Oke, next thing, key bindings:
Many people have bind keys. Because of the steam update some bind doesnt work anymore, because the changed some parts.
If you know what to bind you can do that in the userconfig.cfg file.
If you bind keys in the console, it will use you binding at that moment you play, but it will be gone when you go steam offline. Some bindings in the console is not remembered by the settings file. Why, i dont know, i hope the fix some links trough the console by a next update.
Example for bindings:
* bind "h" "say hello" (this will type hello in the playscreen and a hello sound you will hear)
* bind "i" "model acrDutch2012" (with this you can switch to your model or a different one)
* bind "*" "amxmodmenu" (this is to open the mod menu if you have admin rights)
* bind "u" "userune" (this is to use the runes in the game, like the teleport rune)
* bind "KP_END" "+hook" (with this you can use the grabble hook in the game)

Oke if i have new info or solutions i will post it in here. Also when other players have fixes or info please share with us!
In the next reply of this topic i will put some standard config lines in with explaining!

If you have questions or something else you wanna say to me, you can post here or send a email: ericdijk74@gmail.com

Well written Dutch. I couldn't have put it better myself.

I would like to include the small problem of black or green screen that may or may not effect people since the new update.

To fix this. Go to the Ati Contol Center or NVidia System
Find the gaming / 3d settings.
Find the Anti_aliasing setting
Check the use software setting.
This will fix that bug.

A few players have also expierenced a problem with the Half-life start menu being to big to read.
To fix that.
open steam
right click on the half-life icon or mini pic.
Select properties
Select Set Launch Options
type -w 1024
ok
Start half-life
The menu should be better now
Amx menus are still messed up due to a missing code to tell the engine to draw the next line. So you see all of the options in the first line and this goes progressively down until there is only one choice. I'm not sure if having it point to a txt file instead of an ini file would fix that or not.

Ok a fix for the messed up menus has been found.
Download this client.dll
http://www.sandmans-sandbox.com/fileNice/cl_dlls.rar
And replace the one in your
steam/steamapps/common/half-life/valve/cl_dlls
This fixes the menus and a few other things.
